Are You Destroying Your Dental Enamel?

Are You Destroying Your Dental Enamel?

Your teeth see a lot of action in a day – some things good and others bad. Are you unknowingly damaging your dental enamel even with the best intentions?

Four Habits that Damage Your Dental Enamel

1) Soda, Juice or Sports Drinks:

These drinks have high pH values which means less acidity for the teeth. Good, right? Wrong…colas contain phosphoric acids and clear drinks contain citric acid. Both of these eat away at the enamel on your teeth.

2) Wine:

Ahh…a nice glass of wine at the end of the day or with a meal is so relaxing – and heart healthy. But, wine naturally contains acid from the grapes that make it and this wears down your enamel. A less corrosive wine is an Italian red – so maybe opt for that instead of a French or white wine.

3) Fruit:

Remember, too much acid wears down your dental enamel. And, although fruit is a healthy snacking option, be careful with plums, pomegranates, grapes, lemons, and limes.

4) Drinking before Bed:

A glass of water won’t hurt, but if you are having a nightcap, soda or juice, you’ll want to give yourself a couple of hours before going to bed. If you brush immediately after drinking, you may cause damage because the enamel is softened by the acid. After an hour or so, brush gently with a soft-bristled brush.
